Women in Tanzania’s Artisanal Small-Scale Mining
Women comprise 30% of the artisanal small scale mining workforce. But they are often relegated to lower-paying difficult jobs. They face harassment, unsafe working conditions, a lack of sanitation facilities, and sometimes violence. TWiMMI works to change that. Join us in building a sustainable and inclusive mining future.
From distributing 3,900+ PPEs to launching the East Africa gemstone value addition program, TWiMMI’s impact in 2023/2024 was bold and transformational.

Pamoja Initiative: Transforming Lives Through Gemstone Value Addition
Empowering Tanzania’s mining communities, the Pamoja Initiative has trained 40+ professionals (66% women) from across Africa in gemstone cutting, polishing, and ethical trading since 2024. Participants gain hands-on skills, starter toolkits, and access to global markets—boosting incomes by up to 300% for small-scale miners. Aligned with Tanzania’s mining vision, the program bridges gaps in financial literacy, sustainability, and gender equity, with plans to expand training centers by 2025.
